On the occasion of the International Geodiversity Day at the 41st UNESCO General Conference in 2021, the Slovak Environment Agency in cooperation with the Banská Štiavnica Geopark organized the Geodiversity Day in the Banská Štiavnica Geopark on 13 October 2022. The event was supported by a field trip with knowledgeable experts, guided along the educational and tourist route Farárova hôrka – Richňava with a focus on raising public awareness of the formation and development of the Štiavnica stratovolcano, mining science in the area of Štiavnické Bane and the Piargo water management system with a trip to the Upper Bakomi tunnel. The excursion was also enriched by interactive presentations of the 3D model of the Štiavnické stratovolcano at the premises of the Štiavnické Bane municipal office, as well as in the experiential exhibition Travelling in Time in Banská Štiavnica, where we were transported to the 18th century with the help of modern technologies and where we learned a lot of interesting facts about the history of mining in Banská Štiavnica through virtual reality, holograms, or touch screens.
